About the Solent Swim

swimthesolent.com was established in 2009, to help Isle of Wight charities fundraise through a swim across the solent by their fundraisers.

Initially twenty-four places available for swimmers on a first come, first served basis following the registration process.

The date for the swim has not been set, but will take place mid year. The swim date is when the tides are most favourable nearest to that day, and it takes place in the morning when there is least traffic on the Solent.  The distance is a mile and a quarter, so swimmers must be fit and able to swim that distance in the sea in about an hour. Should the weather be unfavourable, an alternative date will be set.

The swimmers will be accompanied, with RIBs create a corridor across the Solent, and the kayaks guide the swimmers who are paired up according to the time it takes them to swim the distance in the pool, 80 lengths of a 25 metre pool. The lifeboats and RIBs pick up the swimmers at Yarmouth and drop them on the beach at Hurst where they start the swim.

Swimmers from the mainland must be on the island the night before, within easy reach of Yarmouth, so that they can meet up for the rendezvous and be taken over all together to Hurst. It is wise to book accommodation well in advance as it is limited in the area. Subject to confirmation once details are finalised by the nominated charity, who organise the swim.
